Alongside my Family Portraiture work and running Photography Workshops, I also love working with other local small businesses.
Quite often when you’re a sole trader or small business, professional photography can seem like a luxury that is way down the list of things you need to get sorted, but quite often this is one of the key things that can help you stand out from the crowd in your marketing and help to ‘sell’ what you do.
I was delighted when Claire contacted me to say that she was going to be opening a new Gift Shop in St John’s, Woking – firstly because she wanted me to photograph it, and secondly because it’s just down the road from me and would be selling lots of beautiful British-made gifts!
Here are a few questions I asked Claire a few questions about her new business:
1) What made you want to start up your own business?
I have loved collecting ‘trinkety bits/design pieces’ for as long as I can remember and either giving them to friends or keeping them for the house. I have scoured most gift shops and craft fairs in the Country! I hoped one day to open up my own personal collection to a wider audience and that combined with a desire to be my own boss inspired ‘Two Ducks’.
2) What are you most passionate about within your business?
The fact that the gift range is British, unique, and mostly handmade by independent businesses in small studio’s/homes. I love the feel of quality of a hand made gift and the fact that it has been made with passion by its owner.
3) What’s the furthest you’ve had to push yourself out of your comfort-zone into the ‘scary-zone’ to help move your business forward?
I think attending Council meetings and networking sessions which I can get very shy about – I prefer one to one communication generally! I also launched my own range of ‘gift parties’ in people’s homes which meant I had to stand up and talk about the business in front of 10/15 women!! I ended up really enjoying that!
4) Positive feedback is SO important when you run your own business. What’s the best comment you’ve had so far?
“Two Ducks is my absolute favourite place to shop. The products are gloriously British, well made and beautiful. The welcome is incredible, very friendly and Claire has a gift for selecting the perfect gifts!!! Love love love..” Caron Hill, Send, Surrey
5) If you had a shiny crystal ball, what would you hope to see for your business in a years time?
To have a profitable business with lots of regular clients and referrals. To be able to offer Business Sessions to creative businesses to help support and guide them.
6) If you had one piece of advice for people thinking about setting up their own business, what would it be?
Be sure you will be able to adapt to working long, unusual hours and rarely switching off – it’s addictive when it’s your own!!
